Master-Planned Community Del Sur Starts Construction on New Poway Unified School

The third and final Del Sur school will serve students in grades K-8 starting in fall of 2014.

New home community Del Sur is starting construction on its third and final school within the community; Poway Unified School District’s School No. 39. On May 9, District and community members officially broke ground on the K-8 school, which is located on the corner of Lone Quail Rd. and Camino del Sur in San Diego.

School No. 39 will complement Del Sur schools Del Norte High School, which opened in 2009 and Del Sur Elementary School, which opened in 2008. Sandi Burgoyne, Director of Planning for the Poway Unified School District worked with Del Sur on the development of these schools, and will continue working with Del Sur on School No. 39.

“Since the early 1990s, the developer of Del Sur has embraced the District’s commitment to academic excellence,” said Burgoyne. “They have always provided a hands-on approach when it comes to development of educational facilities for students in their community, participating both in the structural design and curriculum development of their community schools. Del Sur continues to participate in the various stages of development, planning, construction and on-going maintenance of the educational facilities, then goes beyond by contributing and participating in their community school activities. We look forward to this continued support with School No. 39.”

Spanning 22 acres, School No. 39 will include 156,000 square feet of learning space with 56 teaching stations, a gym pavilion, amphitheater, fitness trail and more.

The school is scheduled to open in fall of 2014 and will serve 1,500 students.

“We look forward to working with Poway Unified to create another tremendous school for the kids at Del Sur and in surrounding communities,” said Bill Ostrem, president at Del Sur. “From a TV studio at Del Sur Elementary School to a state-of-the-art library at Del Norte High School to the planned tools and amenities at School No. 39, Del Sur will continue to house terrific learning facilities for area kids.”

Getting to Know Your Neighbors Over Wine and Chocolate

When searching for a new home, wine and chocolate may not be the first thing to cross your mind. You’re busy organizing your home search, identifying schools, looking up zip codes, and eventually packing boxes. Months later, you’ve arrived at your new home and just when you think you’ve settled in, you realize it’s time to meet your neighbors.

Over the last couple of years, new home community Del Sur has planned more than 12 community-wide events per year through its Community Services Council.

On Feb. 23, adult-only residents were invited to a wine and chocolate pairing at the community’s eco-friendly information center and event hub, The Ranch House. The event featured an adventurous selection of chocolate and wine, a mac ‘n’ cheese bar, and live music from Main Street Swing Band.

“Events like the wine and chocolate pairing enable adult residents to catch up with their neighbors and meet new ones, too,” said Lisa Sanders, marketing manager at Del Sur. “They are a nice addition to our calendar of family events, which range from Snow Day to the Del Sur Fall Festival.”

Del Sur’s next event is a Spring Circus, which will include acrobats, an Easter egg hunt, food trucks and more. The next adult event will be a Cinco de Mayo fiesta.

Beyond events, residents at Del Sur have access to six neighborhood parks, five with year-round swimming pools heated with solar panels; 18 miles of shared trails; three school sites; and future commercial, retail, office and employment space. Area schools Del Sur Elementary School and Del Norte High School are both top-performing schools within Poway Unified School District (PUSD). Soon, the community will break ground on another PUSD school serving students in grades K-8.

Located in the coastal hills of San Diego – between interstates 5 and 15 and just north of SR-56 – the community has four new home neighborhoods now selling. Prices range from the high $400,000s to more than $1 million.
