Del Sur Residents Enjoy Snow Day 2012

Snow hit sunny Del Sur this season—man-made snow, that is! On Jan. 28, more than 750 residents gathered for Del Sur Snow Day, an annual event at the San Diego master-planned community.

Residents enjoyed snow sledding, snowball and snow angel making, a craft station and toasty treats from Devilicious Food Truck.

Snow Day was a bustling and sunny affair this year. While kids and parents sled down Haaland Glen Park’s snowy hillside, onlookers splashed around in the park’s heated pool. That’s San Diego for ya.

Valentine’s Day Craft Ideas from Del Sur

With Valentine’s Day less than a week away, we thought it might be a good time to whip out the hot glue gun and glittery hearts. Who better to get Valentine’s Day craft ideas from than Martha Stewart? We’ve turned to her website for a variety of heartfelt ideas. Here are a few of our favorites:

Craft for kids: Thumbtack Valentine’s Frames

Cut two pieces of corrugated cardboard slightly larger than artwork; glue together to make a thick frame that tacks won’t poke through. Attach drawing with map tacks or pushpins; hang with a binder clip.

Craft to share with someone special: Candle Blocks

Start with a single 4-by-4-inch cedar post from a lumberyard or home center; cut it into 4-inch cubes. With an electric drill, make holes in the center of each side. Use a drill guide to bore a perpendicular hole, which will enable candles to stand straight and burn evenly. Bit sizes shown are gauged to standard candle thicknesses. Top to bottom: 7/8-inch bit for a hand-dipped taper; 9/32-inch for a stick taper; 1 1/8- to 1 1/2-inch Forstner bit for tealights and large tapers (sizes vary slightly); 3/4-inch spade bit for a Shabbat candle; 15/32-inch bit for a Christmas-tree candle.

Craft to brighten up the house: Conversation Piece

A valentine of any age will enjoy the fun messages that this arrangement delivers.

Jerome’s Furniture Helps Fund Del Sur Elementary School Program

Del Sur Elementary School Principal Doug Johnson; Jerome's Chairman Jerry Navarra & Jerome's Director of Marketing Jim Navarra

Donation brings critical funds to outfit school with engineering class supplies

On January 6, Jerome’s Furniture (Jerome’s) donated $6,000 to Del Sur Elementary School to support a new program, Engineering is Elementary. Representatives from Jerome’s, including Chairman Jerry Navarra; Director of Marketing Jim Navarra; and President and CEO Lee Goodman, presented a check during the school’s bi-weekly Flag Day assembly.

The Engineering is Elementary (EiE) project promotes engineering and technological literacy among children. EiE will provide Del Sur Elementary School students with a research-based, standards-driven, and classroom-tested curriculum that integrates engineering and technology concepts and skills with elementary science topics. EiE lessons not only promote K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning, but also connect with literacy and social studies.

“As a local, family-owned business, we always want to give back when we can,” said Jerry Navarra, chairman at Jerome’s. “Local schools like Del Sur Elementary are critical to support the education of the next generation in our communities. Programs like Engineering is Elementary will provide students with an inventive, interactive learning experience. We’re glad to help – it’s important to us, our employees and our customers.”

Del Sur Elementary School will implement the EiE program this spring. Students will engage in many activities from replicating an artifact to designing knee braces.

“We appreciate the generosity of Jerome’s Furniture,” said Doug Johnson, principal at Del Sur Elementary School. “With their help, we’ve ordered the necessary equipment and are eager to get the program started.  The on-site ceremony at Del Sur created a special dedication – Jerry is a familiar face to many students who see him on TV.”

Part of the award-winning Poway Unified School District, Del Sur Elementary School is located within the master-planned community of Del Sur in San Diego. Del Sur offers seven new home neighborhoods, featuring homes by top builders, including: Standard Pacific Homes, Shea Homes, California West Communities and Davidson Communities. Corhonda Bolton and her two girls were among hundreds of Del Sur residents enjoying a beautiful fall day recently during the master-planned community’s Fall Festival.

Complemented by sunny skies, cool coastal breezes and costumed kids, the event featured an abundance of family-oriented activities, including old-fashioned hayrides, carnival rides and games, music, food and more. The event was one of many hosted by the Community Services Council, all designed to bring Del Sur residents together to foster a greater sense of neighborhood and community.

“Activities like this Fall Festival add tremendously to the sense of community here because neighbors get to get together often,” Bolton said. Having moved here recently from Memphis, Bolton said her daughters, 12 and 8, love Del Sur, especially going to school with their neighbors.
