A community-wide minimum of 50% native and drought-tolerant plants - like the ones pictured above - enable Del Sur to effectively reduce excess water waste. Recycled water is used in common-area irrigation as permitted by the SD County Health Department.
A place where the environment, and your family, can grow together.
Del Sur’s commitment to the environment extends from the entrance, through acres of open space and into the homes. Tank-less water heaters and a weather-based irrigation system are standard in nearly every home – estimated savings are more than 40,000 gallons per home per year. Low-emission windows, energy-efficient appliances and photovoltaic panels are also available in most of the homes.
The community was also designed to encourage residents to walk. The streets of Del Sur are lined with wide sidewalks and trails that connect the parks, homes and town center.
Each green feature helps reduce homeowner costs while also reducing our demand on natural resources. This makes Del Sur the kind of place that doesn’t just benefit its residents, but also our community as a whole.
In fact, Del Sur has been recognized as “Sustainable Community of the Year” by the Building Industry Association (BIA) of Southern California.
Some of Del Sur's most Notable Awards include:
- San Diego Recycler of the Year Award
- 2006 Smart Growth Project of the Year from the local chapter of the Urban Land Institute
- 2006 Earth Award from a local environmental organization
- California Landscaping Association’s Friendly Construction Award
- Sustainable Community of the Year from the Regional Building Industry Association
What is the impact of a green community?
To date, the impact that the Del Sur community has had on our environment has been unbelievable.
For instance, according to PowerLight, Del Sur homeowners using solar power will annually save more than $58,000 collectively in utility bills, which also translates into saving 35,000 barrels of oil and results in a reduction of 820,000 pounds of greenhouse gases.
This is about the same effect as planting nearly 40,000 trees or not driving 21.5 million miles!
